Summer love!

We’re not even to the halfway point of the summer, but I’m pretty sure our house isn’t the only one already getting some of the dreaded cries of  “mommy, I’m bored!”  I’ve been compiling little bits and pieces of fun over the years and have collected some of my favorites here to share with you!

Summer Solstice

The summer has finally officially begun, and we began the week with two new clients, both celebrating new arrivals!

First.. the anticipation… some lovely new clients with an amazing house (including a rooftop pool!) that set the stage for some stunning maternity portraits!

Later that day, the arrival! A fun family with two adorable boys.. both bright and bubbly, one a little more bouncy and one just as sweet as a baby should be!

The Dog Days of Summer

The Dog Days of Summer are coming a little early this year, thanks to a first-ever special event we are so excited to be hosting!  As a special partnership with Dr. Lee Richter, of Richter Animal Hospital, we are thrilled to announce a one-day only charity mini session event, specifically for the four legged members of the family!

The donation of one large bag of dog food is all you need to receive a portrait session with your furry friend (or just for your critter alone, your choice!) and an adorable 4×6 custom photo magnet, over a $75 value!  All the food collected will be given to the local animal shelter, and you’ll get some fun images of your pooch.. a win-win for everyone!

The Dog Days of Summer event will be held July 31st, from 8am to 3pm at Veteran’s Park in Arlington.  You can bring your donation to the event, or drop it off at Richter Animal Hospital the week before the session, but you MUST sign up ahead of time, there are a limited number of spaces and they will go quickly!

Get your little pups primped and ready… the dog house won’t know what hit it! :)

Contrary Mary

I *puffy heart* this commercial from Target.. every time it comes on I catch my breath and take a minute.  Such a simple concept, but so heartbreakingly true.  On Monday Mary likes yellow.. by Tuesday it is green. And so it goes… kids are so passionate for just a split second.. about baby dolls, than barbies.. tow trucks, then legos.. and you just never know when their minds are changing until it’s too late and they are already gone.   I can’t tell you how many of my girls’ little games and favorite toys that I would love to have captured, but always put it off… for another day when I had more time, after I got them the right outfit to wear in the pictures, a little bit sunnier, a little bit cooler, when their bangs have grown out or their teeth have come in… and then, just as quickly, that moment was gone.

Clients ask me all the time, what’s the best time to have portraits made? What age? What time of year? What time of day? My answer is always the same.

Right now.

A week from now, a month from now, even a few days from now, your kids will not be the same people they are in this very minute. With each new dawn, they are becoming new, more interesting people than you ever thought possible, bigger and brighter glimpses of the amazing adults they will someday be, shaped by all their funny little quirks and silly childish moods they experienced along the way.  And what better record of childhood could you get… not just the curl of their pigtails or the number of freckles on their nose, but little bits and pieces of the tiny people they used to be, if only for a day.

Tiny peek

Super fast Monday morning peek from two of my favorite minis last weekend.. a girly girl and two very boyish boys.. just a perfect mix!  What a great weekend.. and so many more fun ones still to share!

Have a great week!

Imagination Movers

Last Sunday I got caught in the crossfires of a fierce gun battle.  The Sheriff had a rouge Native cornered, and the two battled it out with pistols firing and tomahawks flying.  When both had run out of ammunition, they boarded a pirate ship and finished with a duel, swordfighting for my honor.

Or something like that.

It won’t be long before these boys have no interest in anything that doesn’t plug in to the wall or have an ignition. But how amazing is my job, that I got to help their mom capture just a little sliver of this age.. bottle up a moment that will be gone before we know it… lest we ever forget the magical world little boys dwell in, where the good guys always win and a kiss from mommy can still cure even the most fatal of battle wounds. Thank you guys, for reminding me how lucky I am… and starting my weekend off with a smile!

Summer Style

Summer portrait sessions are always fun… it’s the season of casual & cool! If you’ve got a session coming up and are pressed for what to choose when outfitting everyone, look for things that are light & airy to really reflect the season, and to keep your family from melting in the Texas heat too!

This is a great season to go with crisp linens, beachy pastels, and bold, sailboat-inspired strips and checks.  Now is the season to embrace the bold colors and fun, trendy styles!  Let the girls wear bright patterns and tie dyed dresses, or tiny tanks and tutus! And let your boys run wild in their sassy retro t-shirts and mismatched shorts!  It’s also a fun time to bring along a few extra accessories to the session, for a quick dress up change… don a cape or wand, let their imagination take flight! As always, look for items that will keep everyone comfortable, and free to run around and embrace the fun of the season!

Here’s a few of our top picks for the season to help you get some ideas going!  Any of these would look GREAT at the Dallas Arboretum minis coming up this weekend!  Book one today and we’ll gift you two complimentary 5×7 prints!

Dino-ROAR!

This sweet boy belongs to a family I have been lucky enough to have been visiting with since long before he was a twinkle in his mama’s eyes…both his big brother and big sister have been longtime favorite subjects of mine, they never seem to take a bad picture and are always happy to continue shooting on and on… what more could a girl want? :)

How about some super special, super timeless photos of little man with his beloved dinosaurs and dragons? It’s a great example of how you can personalize your session without being at home.. we were at the Las Colinas Canas for some gorgeous portraits of all the kids in the canals and archways, but mom was smart enough to think ahead and pack along Cooper’s most prized possessions, so we could sneak away and have some special one-on-one portraits that really capture this age so perfectly!

(but one very tired mommy!)

Just a few snaps from our whirlwind vacation, from Texas to OKC, St Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Thorp (population 900 or so!), Minneapolis, Kansas City, and finally home again! Too many fun memories to share, those of you on facebook probably got more than enough from my snaps along the way, but it was too fun not to share!  Hope everyone is enjoying their summer thus far.. I already need a vacation to recover from the vacation!

Now that we’re back in town we’re back at work, cranking out some of our favorite images ever from recent sessions, and getting super excited about sessions already lined up for the summer. Summer bookings are always popular, since the kids are out of school so there’s a little more flexibility in time, and if your kids are a little older and not changing much month to month, it’s a fabulous way to get your holiday photos done before the mad fall rush!  Also, don’t forget about our super special summer minis… cool new locations and things we haven’t done in a mini before.. check them out before they melt like the snowcone in my hand right now! :)

Worth the wait…

This session was a long time in the making.  A few (okay, more than a few!) long conversations between mom and I about what they were looking for, how my sessions worked, what location would be best, and the mood we were trying to capture.. followed by a few weeks (okay, more than a few!) of missed opportunities, reschedules, last minute changes, and unavoidable conflicts.  And finally, Saturday arrived and all of the stars aligned for us!  Everyone’s schedules lined up, the weather was perfect, and oh, did I mention, the whole family walked up looking like they were sent to me by Ford Modeling Agency?  I’m not going to deny squealing a little when I saw them come through the gates of the Arboretum.. dressed just right.. coordinated but not matchy, casual but still classic, and all with the most perfect accessory imaginable.. big, bright smiles!

The whole session was one giggle fest after another, and, as is usually the case with little boys, a few wrestling matches in between.  Huge props to mom & dad for letting the boys just be themselves.. everything really comes out so much better when everyone steps back and lets go of expectations, just letting things happen naturally.  Easier on the parents (who don’t have to stress!), easier on me (who gets great, natural pictures without trying!) and especially easier on the kids (who can enjoy the day instead of getting nagged and picked at about their posture and facial expressions for an hour!). It was really just like falling into step with old friends, even if we had all just met at the gates that morning!

I cannot wait to share the rest of these pictures with the family, but since I’m currently on vacation (writing the blog at midnight on Saturday, only six hours until we leave!!! but scheduling it to post later in the week) they’ll have to wait a little bit longer than usual to get the proofs.  (Which is also why they are getting a larger-than-usual sneak peek!) I know for me, it was such a fun morning that it was worth all the delays in scheduling.. let’s just hope they think their pictures are worth the wait as well!

By the way.. how typically boy is this.. instead of just a jumping picture, big brother had to time his launch perfectly so as to get in the air at precisely the right time to be able to smack his little brother on the head mid-air!  I might have stopped him, except that it made me laugh so much, and to be honest I was impressed with his timing and aim… he accomplished this three times in a row!  Boys! :)

Just a reminder, I am still on vacation until June 4th, all voicemails and emails are being checked periodically but answered on an as-needed basis, please be patient while we play catch up but do know we will get to everyone as soon as we can!
