That look

First an apology.. not sure how this wonderful family got overlooked and was never blogged, I will blame the onset of the holiday rush for my absentmindedness… so sorry!  I digress.. back to the post!

As a photographer, I pride myself on capturing expressions.  The twinkle in a little girl’s eye as she twirls across the floor, the mischievous grin of a brother as he tickles his sister, the proud glow of a tween, radiating newfound confidence in her wise old almost-teen years… My job is to catch all of those faces, those emotions, that make up your child’s personality… so that I can evoke one of my all-time favorite comments from a parent.. “I see that face all the time! It’s just so HIM.”

But with this family, I found myself concentrating so much more on the other expressions in the room.  As much as I adore the sweet yawn of a sleepy newborn, or the pensive, curious peering eyes of a wide awake baby, watching you intently as you move through the room… as much as I love everything about those tiny little faces, my favorite faces at a newborn session are the ones looking AT the baby.  There is something so pure and raw about the love a parent has for their child, amplified tenfold in those first few weeks, when, both out of inspiration and exhaustion, the sheer magnitude of creating a new life is both exhilarating and overwhelming… nothing if not awe-inspiring… all the months of planning and preparing, and this little person arrives better, more perfect, more beautiful than you could ever imagine. It’s that feeling like your chest might just explode from the pure love and devotion radiating out your skin… the kind of love you think you’ve felt until you feel it for real… then you instantly know you’ve never felt anything this amazing in your life!

These are the faces that make this portrait more than just a pretty picture. The feelings that make these people more than just blood relatives. For the first time, they are a family. And this, is love.

Summer Solstice

The summer has finally officially begun, and we began the week with two new clients, both celebrating new arrivals!

First.. the anticipation… some lovely new clients with an amazing house (including a rooftop pool!) that set the stage for some stunning maternity portraits!

Later that day, the arrival! A fun family with two adorable boys.. both bright and bubbly, one a little more bouncy and one just as sweet as a baby should be!

Third time’s a charm

I make no secret about the fact that I love third babies. They are, as a general rule of thumb, the most easy going, best sleepers, and all around cuddliest babies to be found. This might be true also of fourth and fifth babies, but I’m hoping to never find that out first hand, so I’m sticking with the third theory. :) I also have never shied away from professing my love for girls. I was a girly girl, my favorite color is still pink, and the three little girls who occupy my house and heart are just about the greatest little people I could have imagined. Again, I’m sure I would feel the same had I had any boys, but I didn’t… I had my girls, and I love girls to pieces.

And so, I ask, what could possibly bring me more joy than to find out that one of my most favorite clients was expecting another baby..  yes.. their third.. and yes.. third GIRL!?! I’m pretty sure they could hear my squeals all the way from Ft Worth. Every baby is a blessing. But a third baby girl in this amazing family? A guaranteed rock star!

Sweet Lily Kate did not disappoint.. she slept through all of our poking and prodding, through four diaper changes and eight yards of tulle.. not a peep! Big sisters were as fabulous as I knew they would be.. appropriately fascinated with her tiny toes and soft head but also just contained enough to keep from bouncing her off the bed in excitement.

And mom? Totally chill, totally relaxed, and looks totally amazing! Yes, people, she *just* had a baby!

I wish I could post more.. I wish I could post them all! But i have to leave a few suprises (like the perfect family shot!) for when the gallery is ready.  Congratulations all, I didn’t think your family could be any more fun, but it looks like you’ve finally outdone yourselves!  :)

Bright eyed and bushy tailed

Ok not so much on the bushy tail part.. but it made for a cute headline! :)

Session yesterday wtih an incredibly sweet family.. gorgeous nursery full of light… adorable baby girl I could not WAIT to photograph.  Oh, the plans I had. And yet, how long am I going to work with children before I come to understand the basic fact: kids ALWAYS have plans of their own!

And this baby girl.. oh her beautiful bright eyes.. that WOULD. NOT. CLOSE. We swaddled, and fed, and cuddled, and fed, and swung, and fed, and even tried the old carseat on the dryer to mimic driving vibrations trick.. NOTHING. I am not exaggerating when I say she was laughing at us. If only you could have seen that little smirk we got every time we’d peel back the blanket, certain she’d crashed by now. Oh, the expressions on that one!

That’s not to say we didn’t get plenty of great wide awake shots… and some amazing stuff with mom and dad. And yes, after nearly three hours, she did pass out in the end.. giving me about five minutes to capture a few precious curled up in a ball sleeping shots. Just not the shots I’d planned.

But apparently I need to learn, I’m not the one whose plans really count!  Besides, I can’t imagine a better quality for a little girl to have than the assertiveness and confidence to speak her mind.. and march to the beat of her very own drum!

Sweet, sweet baby girl

Just one week old and already.. scrumptious.  Sweet baby Elisa is the newest member of a family I love dearly.. her mom and I have been friends for as long as I can remember, and I have been counting down the days until this little girl’s arrival.  The good news is that she is an absolute dream.. sleeping well (as well as you can expect from a newborn!), eating well, and everyone swears she never cries! (I’ve heard that one before, but I also didn’t hear a peep during our 2.5 hour session!)

The bad news is that I got a new lens the very day after we took these pictures, so I’m afraid I’m going to have to come back again very soon and play some more!

Congrats guys, she is perfect!

Visions of sugarplums

Wishing you & yours visions of whatever makes your heart warm and your toes smile.. and dreams as sweet as this little guy’s milk-induced euphoria!

My family and I are heading out for a much-needed vacation tomorrow morning and we will be closed for business until the first of the year.  Many exciting new things coming in Janaury, but for now, some R&R with my favorite people in the world.  Feel free to call or email during the time off, we will check them frequently and return sporadically as needed.  Thanks so much to everyone for making 2009 our best year ever, and we look forward to an even better 2010!

Merry everything.. and the happiest of new years to you all!

Tis the season

for newborns!  We are seeing quite the boom of fresh little December babies, with two just this week and two more on the books for this week…so much for the end of the busy season! But with sweet little faces like these, who could resist?

Both of these baby girls have big brothers who I also saw as newborns, so it was doubly fun to see them all grown up!

Not much time for eloquent words today.. still have about a million tiny details left to wrap up for holiday orders and I should probably shower at some point… but I don’t want to wash the sweet baby smell off my hands! :)

Will work for cheese sticks

This sweet baby girl belongs to an even sweeter friend of mine, and we have been waiting so long, it seems, to finally meet her!  These pictures were my baby gift to her (it sure beats braving the crowds at Babies r Us!) and so, of course, I refused to let her pay me.  Sweet girl that she is, she insisted on taking me to lunch after the marathon session.  And so, here I sit, with work piled up around me, hurriedly putting together a sneak peek for my sweet, sweet friend and her sweet, sweet baby girl.  I know, too many sweets. But I can’t deny it.. you might just get a toothache from looking at these! :)

Happy New Year!

Hope everyone is enjoying a peaceful, loving, and joyful 2009! :)   Here’s to hoping it’s the best one yet!

We’re still on hiatus until Monday, and have some fun stuff planned to announce in the next few weeks, but I’m starting the new year off with our newest project.. the Image of the Month!  Each month we’ll pick one of our favorite pictures shot in the previous month as the new Image of the Month.  The winning picture will be featured on the top of the blog for the entire month, and the winning family receives an 8×10 of that picture and a $10 Toys R Us gift card as our prize!

No votes, no popularity.. just a way for us to showcase our favorites!

The January Image of the Month was an easy choice… this session was sweet baby girl’s second with us, but her first outside the womb! I could have picked about ten from her session, but I went with this one because of the softness, the peaceful moment. And because I *know* her mommy was so tired that day, and yet she just shines so radiantly.. truly the inexplicable glow of a new mom! I love the eye contact, especially in a newborn so tiny.. I think that’s a good sign for a very confident, assertive personality to come! :)   And more than anything, I love it when moms join in on the session.  We’re all tired, frazzled, and way too self conscious… but what a treasure to have, a gift for our children to remember thier early years as they truly were.. surrounded by the love of our mommies!

On the clock

My new employee was on the clock from the moment he arrived.. not returning phone calls or emails, but just curling up into a delicious little bundle that i couldn’t help but want to photograph!

I am thrilled to introduce Roman Scott, born August 31, 2008 to my sweet assistant Erin and her darling husband Scott. Big brother and sister are understandably smitten, and I couldn’t be happier for the entire family.

But you don’t care about how I feel.. I can hear you screaming at the computer now… let’s see the pictures!!!

Congratulations!!
