That look

First an apology.. not sure how this wonderful family got overlooked and was never blogged, I will blame the onset of the holiday rush for my absentmindedness… so sorry!  I digress.. back to the post!

As a photographer, I pride myself on capturing expressions.  The twinkle in a little girl’s eye as she twirls across the floor, the mischievous grin of a brother as he tickles his sister, the proud glow of a tween, radiating newfound confidence in her wise old almost-teen years… My job is to catch all of those faces, those emotions, that make up your child’s personality… so that I can evoke one of my all-time favorite comments from a parent.. “I see that face all the time! It’s just so HIM.”

But with this family, I found myself concentrating so much more on the other expressions in the room.  As much as I adore the sweet yawn of a sleepy newborn, or the pensive, curious peering eyes of a wide awake baby, watching you intently as you move through the room… as much as I love everything about those tiny little faces, my favorite faces at a newborn session are the ones looking AT the baby.  There is something so pure and raw about the love a parent has for their child, amplified tenfold in those first few weeks, when, both out of inspiration and exhaustion, the sheer magnitude of creating a new life is both exhilarating and overwhelming… nothing if not awe-inspiring… all the months of planning and preparing, and this little person arrives better, more perfect, more beautiful than you could ever imagine. It’s that feeling like your chest might just explode from the pure love and devotion radiating out your skin… the kind of love you think you’ve felt until you feel it for real… then you instantly know you’ve never felt anything this amazing in your life!

These are the faces that make this portrait more than just a pretty picture. The feelings that make these people more than just blood relatives. For the first time, they are a family. And this, is love.

It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish…

And you KNOW that any session that ends like this is going to be a favorite of mine! Is there anything better than meeting some new clients and deciding you already love them within the first five minutes? Love love love!!

Peek-o-Rama!

The blog has been so quiet this summer… but back to school means back to the regular routine… lots of sessions to share, so lots of blogging to do!

A few peeks from last weekend’s mini sessions at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, and then a few peeks of just a few of our fabulous new card selections… it’s going to be a fun holiday season!

Paradise Found

Last weekend I had the incredible honor of traveling with some of my favorite clients to their vacation home in the stunningly beautiful Cabo san Lucas, Mexico, to photograph “a weekend in the life,” so to speak. These kinds of long, insanely awesome sessions usually have me overflowing with sweet words to match the pictures, but I think my sense are still on overload, because I am (huge shocker) at a complete loss for words.

No way to describe how amazing this family is, a family that lives, by their own admission, an extraordinary life, with a schedule that would make the most organized CEO’s head spin. But with that also comes the priceless life experiences they’ve shared, both awe-inspiring and heartbreaking, and I have no doubt that each of their unique children are growing into amazingly well-rounded, wordly yet grounded, honest and compassionate human beings.

Oh, and they’re also just a complete blast to hang out with!

This weekend we did portraits on the beach, a boat trip to sea, and horseback riding along the coast.  They also had house guests in the form of their adorable cousins from New Jersey, who were quick to declare the white sands of Cabo MUCH cooler than the Jersey Shore. (Take that, MTV!) It was a lot to pack into three fun days, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat! (No seriously, guys.. I haven’t unpacked yet.. just say when!) I have so. many. pictures. to share, it is going to take me forever just to scroll through them all. However, since I know they are all still lounging by the pool with little umbrella-laden drinks, anxiously awaiting some kind of peek, I’ve picked out a few to post here now. Not all my favorites, since I had to save some for their sure-to-be-a-knockout holiday cards this year, but hopefully enough to tide them over until I can get settled back in here, unpack my things, recharge my cameras, shake the sand out of my shoes, and get my land-legs back. (Yes, as a matter of fact, I did get quite seasick on the boat.. but it was worth it!)

Without further ado… here’s to a weekend that did NOT suck! Not one tiny bit!

Our dog days of summer event was a huge success on Saturday, collecting over 350 pounds of food for the local animal rescue group and capturing so many sweet, slobbering smiles I can’t even begin to count! And that was just the kids! :)

A few sneak peeks for everyone who braved the heat with us… and a quick note to those of you who missed out on the fun, we had such a great response that we added another day!  Saturday, September 11 from 8am-11am we’ll take as many doggies as we can fit in.. but they will go quickly, so email asap to join in!

Fight like a Girl

As many of my faithful blog readers know, I am a huge supporter of the fight against Breast Cancer. I’ve done the 3-day walk, donated sessions to survivors, and gifted items or money to fundraisers to support the cause. I have had friends and family members diagnosed, and also a few very special clients along the way who I was lucky enough to photograph through their journey, however short it was cut.

It is the culmination of these experiences that has brought me to today, to announce a very special project that I am *thrilled* to be a part of.  Along with one of my best friends (a survivor herself), I am proud to introduce

I Fight Like a Girl,

A photographic essay celebrating survivors and the lessons they have learned. We’ve been photographing and interviewing survivors for the last few months (with many more still to post and scheduled to shoot!) and finally have the site up and running.  There are no “donate” buttons, no meetings to attend. It’s just a collection of portraits of these brave women, along with a little excerpt of their story.  Every story is unique, and every perspective has its place.

In their words, we see that our reactions are completely different, and yet eerily similar, no matter the age, race, or background.  In their faces, we see the strength of a warrior, yet still with the softness and beauty of a woman, a fighter’s spirit with a mother’s touch. That glimmer of a smile in their eyes, the sense of humor that got them through the long nights, yet still that hint of sadness, from eyes that have seen more pain and faced greater fears than any one person should have to endure.

Please take a moment to check it out, read their stories, leave a comment if you are so inclined. And feel free to check back, as we hope to be adding more faces and stories in the next few weeks.  We are beyond excited about this project, and we hope you feel the same.

Lastly, why the boxing gloves? I’ll let Stacy, one of our participants, explain it for you:

“Boxing is the perfect metaphor for cancer. It isn’t a war, where you’re hiding in bushes, covered in camouflage and firing covert missiles at a faraway target.

It’s just you, and the cancer, in that ring together. Face to face, one on one.

Sure, you’ve got a stadium full of fans, cheering you on, but you’re the only one taking the punches, you’re the only one really feeling the blow.

That’s why it’s so important to have someone in your corner who’s been there, who can tell you when to bob and when to weave, when to give yourself a break,
and when to raise your arms in victory.”

The Modern Family

If you don’t already watch Modern Family, please do… it is by far one of my favorite shows of last season, mostly because of how accurately (however painfully so) they portray the hilarious, frustrating, complicated, insane moments of family life.  Last May’s family portrait scene, of course, stood out for me, as I have not only seen this in families as the photographer, but yes, I will admit, I’ve been that mom too. (can’t figure out how to post just the clip, but if you fastforward to the last five minutes or so you’ll see what I mean)

Watch Modern Family: The Portrait

Perhaps that’s why this family portrait makes me smile so much.  Everyone was gathered for Grandma’s 60th birthday, so we met beforehand to do some nice portraits of the whole family. Yes, we got some sweet, smiling, posed ones… but this one, just before we got started, really speaks to me. No, you can’t see everyone’s faces, and yes, there are a million different things going on… but isn’t that what family life is all about? A bunch of people who love each other going in a million different directions at the same time, yet pausing for just a moment to be there for each other, be together, be one family? This is what I call one, big, happy, {modern} family!

How do I love thee?

Thee-se three kids, to be exact.. no, not my own.. but sometimes I wish they were!  Some of my favorite little clients and their amazing mommy.. back again for another storybook session. The day in the life of a FIVE year old! Be still my heart.. seems like we just did Reagan’s one year old session! But five! And such a smart, silly, sweet little girl she has become! Oh, how much fun I have had watching this little family grow and blossom… I have a feeling some amazing things are coming to them in the next year… goodness knows they deserve nothing but the very best! (I just hope they all know it too!)

Hugs to you all.. see you again very soon!

Baby, don’t you cry

Midsummer blues got you down? I feel your pain!  Obviously, our blog is feeling it too… so sadly neglected for much too long!  But never fear, lots of new posts, great pictures, and exciting adventures are coming back very soon!
