Team Kelcy

I’m breaking my Image of the Month rules again, this time the image isn’t even one I took!  BUT it’s got a much more important purpose…

This sweet face belongs to Kelcy Orr, a dear friend of our family who was recently, at the  tender age of three, diagnosed with kidney cancer.  Kelcy’s big sister has been a friend of my oldest since they were both just tiny little toddlers, and I couldn’t imagine a sweeter, more loving family.. the whole situation is absolutely breaking my heart!  Please help me in supporting her family.. as they say on the commercials for St. Jude’s, give thanks for the healthy kids in your life by helping those who are not!

What can you do? Join us on Sunday, March 28, at 8am for Kicks for Kelcy, a 5k race/1 mile family fun run fundraiser.  We’re hoping to raise money for the family as well as raise their spirits by showing them just how many people are behind them, supporting them, every step of the way.

Click here to download a copy of the flyer, please fill out the form and mail it in (preregistration is VERY important, as we have to have an accurate headcount for our permits!) and please please, pass it on to everyone you know!  We’re asking everyone in attendance to wear purple, Kelcy’s favorite color, to show a sea of unity as we walk.  You can also buy a support shirt from the online store we set up, all proceeds going directly to the family as well.

And keep in touch! We have a facebook group set up to keep everyone connected with upcoming fundraisers and updates on sweet Kelcy’s progress… we are all praying for her, but she needs our actions too!

Somebunny is getting excited!

Are you excited about the bunny sessions next weekend? I sure am!  Just a tiny glimpse of what’s to come… maximum cuteness overload!!

We have just a few spaces left in these special, first-ever sessions, they filled up faster than I was expecting! But we are SO excited about these sessions, we’re going to offer a FREE session to the first two people to respond!  Just hop on over to your email and send us a note!

Hoppy Thursday! :)

Bright eyed and bushy tailed

Ok not so much on the bushy tail part.. but it made for a cute headline! :)

Session yesterday wtih an incredibly sweet family.. gorgeous nursery full of light… adorable baby girl I could not WAIT to photograph.  Oh, the plans I had. And yet, how long am I going to work with children before I come to understand the basic fact: kids ALWAYS have plans of their own!

And this baby girl.. oh her beautiful bright eyes.. that WOULD. NOT. CLOSE. We swaddled, and fed, and cuddled, and fed, and swung, and fed, and even tried the old carseat on the dryer to mimic driving vibrations trick.. NOTHING. I am not exaggerating when I say she was laughing at us. If only you could have seen that little smirk we got every time we’d peel back the blanket, certain she’d crashed by now. Oh, the expressions on that one!

That’s not to say we didn’t get plenty of great wide awake shots… and some amazing stuff with mom and dad. And yes, after nearly three hours, she did pass out in the end.. giving me about five minutes to capture a few precious curled up in a ball sleeping shots. Just not the shots I’d planned.

But apparently I need to learn, I’m not the one whose plans really count!  Besides, I can’t imagine a better quality for a little girl to have than the assertiveness and confidence to speak her mind.. and march to the beat of her very own drum!

Ordinary Miracles

I photographed this family back in December, when things were crazy, and just realized I hadn’t blogged about them until now.  Perhaps because of an oversight, or perhaps because I had a hard time finding the words to describe them, and still do.

2010 has not been kind to this family.  Without sharing more personal details than that, I can tell you they have had a tough time.  And yet, despite the turmoil, the pain, and the uncertainty they must feel, I’ve rarely been with a family that was more centered, more grounded, more close and loving.  And suprisingly happy! Their faith has kept them strong, and I have no doubt there are some “ordinary miracles” waiting in the wings for these incredibly special people.  Here’s to happy endings!

Random Top Ten for February: My Favorite Apps

Let me preface this list by saying I was a HUGE fan of the blackberry. Dead set against getting an iphone.  However, in adding a phone for my daughter to our line the sales rep explained how it would save us money for me to switch and use my husband’s phone after he went with the newer model, and while I may be stubborn I am even more frugal. And so, I sadly made the horrific transition to touch screens and Mac-brained operations and spell check autocomplete that seems to think it knows better than I do what it is I am trying to say, often mangling my sentances beyond recognition.  I do NOT love this phone.

But.

I LOVE the apps. For all the inconveniences in other elements of the phone (Why does it not have a task list not sync to outlook?! makes no sense!) I get soo much more done (and have way more fun!) just with the touch of a finger.  I love having this mobile amusement park (and often babysitter) in my purse or pocket, ready to inform, problem solve, and, let’s be honest, mostly amuse.

And so, I present, in no particular order, my favorite apps.

1. Kids Checkup Created by the amazing folks at Cook Childrens, this app is incredibly useful. Look up symptoms (is it a sore throat or strep? flu or a cold?) and basic first aid rules, and find your answers to a million parenting/health/emotional questions.  It also has a super useful interactive map of the different Cooks locations (so you can find the nearest one in a pinch!) and contact numbers for every department and specialty. Oh, and my favorite section? The tour, where you can see a great assortment of pictures in and around the hospital, showcasing some of the people and facilities that make it such an amazing place. (and yes, I may be partial to that section having taken a good chunk of the photos, but the rest of my review of the app was completely unbiased.. it really is useful!) :)

2. Words with Friends OMG this game. Basically a glorified scrabble, however in our house it is more like literary crack. We can NOT put this down. Even my daughters, ages 8 and 12, play this obsessively. The fun of the game is that you can play different people (who also have the app) so after you make a move, it sends them a message and they can play on the same board. Yes, we are very competitive. No, I am not very good. My husband, on the other hand, regularly plays 100+ point words. (If you play you understand this is BIG) Terrible or not, I love it! (By the way, my user name is annbeck if you already play!)

3. Solitaire Yes, old school solitaire, just like the game that comes standard on every PC. Boring, predictable solitaire. I think it’s the ying in my life to the yang of words. My only competition is myself, and I can actually win. But hey, it’s fun! And if I have to give up and start over, no one knows but me! :)

4. Wfaa.com Again, partially biased having worked at WFAA for a number of years, so I will admit I’ve never tried another local news ap, but I’m also happy enough with this one to not need to! Quick access to the top stories, sports scores, etc, but the section I use most is weather, where you can choose from a detailed forecast, multi-day view, or live radars, which are super helpful in bad weather.

5. Twitteriffic I love twitter!  So fun to read what everyone is up to, and I’ve found the most random people I would never expect have become really interesting to read! I don’t update as much as I would like, but I’m working on it.. and always reading it! (BTW I’m @annbeckphoto if you want to follow me there!)

6. Facebook The facebook app saved me from cutting facebook out of my day completely. I found it was wayy to easy to get sucked in when on the computer, but with the app I can check statuses, reply to messages, confirm friends, etc, without getting lost in a farm game or taking a quiz to find out which 80’s move I am (Sixteen Candles! Who knew?).  And of course, you can still visit FAN PAGES if you want! :)

7. Mobile Photobooth Ridiculously simple and fun, this app works just like a photobooth.. beeps a countdown four times and snaps a picture every three seconds, then saves them into a black & white strip, even allowing instant sharing via twitter, facebook or email.. so fun! A great stuck in a line waiting nothing else to do activity.. the kids cannot put this one down.

8. Emoji Icons Was forced into this app by my 12 year old, but I’ve found I actually don’t HATE this as much as I thought… and there are times when sending a cartoon happy face with a tongue hanging out and bug eyes gets the message across better than :) ever could. Plus there are way more pictures than I could ever use (although I will say, she has tried to use them all.. in one single text!) so you can find lots of random pictures to fit random moments.

9. Catch Words If you’ve played the addictingly fun game Catchphrase at a party, you know how this game works. Same setup, same rules, but on your phone! The screen flashes a word and the player looking at it tries to describe it to their partner as quickly as possible, once they guess correctly it passes on. There’s a ticking timer that makes tensions run high and it almost always ends in (happy) hollering and debate. We love this game at get-togethers so having it on the phone is SO nice.. easy to break out a quick game at a hotel or last minute gathering, or just with the kids around the dinner table!

10. Puppy Park I could do a whole other list of our favorite apps for the kids, since the ipods/iphones have become our traveling/carpooling/dentist office waiting room/good behavior reward livesavers. We have found sooo many great apps that are fun and educational and wholesome but still fun! (Mad libs, Highlights Hidden Pictures, Scoops Ice Cream Catch, Monkey Preschool, just to name a few!) but Puppy Park is one that definitely crosses the kid/adult boundaries. Simple concept.. you move the colored cards (with puppies on them) around on the board so that they touch like-colored cards. Red next to red, blue touching blue, etc.  Except you get more cards at an increasingly fast rate and have to keep making matches and clearing them before it fills up and oh the timer! The barking dogs! I love this game.. but can’t get past level six on EASY mode.

That list happened really quickly.. I’m sure I could do another ten! As many as I have, I’m always on the lookout for more! What are your favorites? What apps would you love to see? Let me know!

Head of the class

I have photographed this beautiful girl (young woman!) since she was just a tween.. braces and all.  Over the years, I have been so thrilled to watch her blossom into this gorgeous creature you see today.. not only beautiful on the outside, but incredibly talented in music and, oh by they way, super smart too!  As if all of that weren’t enough, she has that one thing so often lacking in girls her age: self confidence.  She is her own person, and proud of it!

That independence just glows, even radiates from her… it’s the twinkle in her eye, the spring in her step.  Even when you see flashes of the classic attitude (“Mooom! ugh!” -insert eyeroll here-) she’s still got it.. and she’s still just so fun to be around that you let the teen angst slide.  I was thrilled to photograph her for senior portraits and can’t wait to see what’s in store for her in the future!

Bunnies!!

Thanks to an overly fertile pet bunny and incredibly generous client we are thrilled to announce that we will be offering one special day of bunny mini sessions! I know the snow is still melting, but as Texas weather goes we will be in swimsuits soon enough, and these will be the perfect spring portraits to kick off the new season!  We’ll also have some fresh new designs for Easter cards, which will showcase these images perfectly!

And of course, these won’t be the usual mall photos.. sit and smile with one rabbit fenced in a basket.. these will be our usual fun & candid style, which means your kiddos in a lush green field, romping and playing with four or five sweet baby bunnies!

These special sessions are VERY limited, and will be held one day only, Sunday March 14, from 8:30am-3pm at River Legacy Park in Arlington.  Sessions are 25 minutes long, a bit longer to accommodate the precarious nature of working with both kids AND animals.  Each session is $75 per family, no limit on the number of subjects.

Due to their limited nature, these special baby bunny sessions are filling up very quickly.. please contact us asap to schedule yours… before they all hop away!

Snowtorious BIG and February Image of the Month

Wow.. what a week! Our snowman has melted into one icy lump in the front yard, but I’m sure the memories of last week’s snow will last for years to come!  I’m choosing one of these as our image of the month.. even though technically it’s cheating to use my own family as the winner, there wasn’t another image that better captured this past month! Back to regular rules in March, I promise! :)

Speaking of rules, our winner in the “Who do you love” contest was William from Arlington, who wrote: “I love my wife.  She’s given me the best twelve years I could imagine, and gives everything she has to taking care of me and our three beautiful children. I could never repay her enough!”

Say it with me.. AWWWWWWW :)

Now.. to the pictures!

Pink and Blue

It is no secret that I have three daughters. But growing up, I was the little sister to a big brother. That is the relationship I know the best, that give and take from race cars to tea parties, which usually ends either in some sort of compromise wherein the race cars are the guests at the tea party, or a fight, wherein the race cars crash into the party, sending tiny cups flying and sisters running frantically to mommy for backup.  As the saying goes, 90% best friends, 10% arch enemies.

The kiddos in this family fit that profile exactly… one minute sweet and kissy, the next wrestling it out.  Or lassoing baby dolls, as the case may be!  I couldn’t help myself from falling completely in love with the two of them, from one extreme to the other.. they were so funny and sweet! It took nearly the whole ride home to wipe the smile off my face that I got from a morning with this family, they were just that much fun to be around!

I can’t wait to show the rest of these pictures to mom & dad.. I hope they’ll be as happy with them as I am.. but for now a sweet sneak peek.. enjoy! :)
